A Web Field Trip through United States History
President
George Washington
Besides visiting places,
it might be nice to drop in, unannounced, on some persons who have played
prominent roles in the history of the United States. After finishing
at Valley Forge, it would seem fitting that we should pay a visit to George
Washington. Besides the leadership role played by George Washington
in securing the nation's independence in the War of the American Revolution,
he also played leadership roles in framing the Constitution and serving
as the nation's first President in the new federal republic from 1789 to
1797. His steady leadership proved to be vital in these formative
stages of the United States.
We will visit President Washington at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History-"The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden." Please click on the URL http://americanhistory.si.edu/presidency/home.html. When the Smithsonian web site appears, click on the picture of George Washington, the first president, and read the text. After the text you will notice four items from President Washington's life have been provided for your viewing under "Objects Related to this President." Click on the first item, view and read, click the command for back or click on the small picture of President Washington, go to the next item, read and review, repeat until all items have been viewed, and then return to your field trip transporter. You may be able to return to the field trip transporter by clicking the Back or Go command or the transporter site may be available by clicking on the "introd: file" box on the bottom tool bar. Then please respond to the following questions on your answer sheet.
1. What were
two precedents set by President Washington?
2. Why is George
Washington called the "Father of His Country"?
3. Did President
Washington assume the Presidency with the greatest of confidence?
