DIAGNOSTIC ON

The DIAGNOSTIC ON is used primarily for Linear Regression.  It generates the Linear Correlation Coefficient (symbol is "r") that is imperative for deciding if a data set has strong or weak correlation -- that is, if the data points can produce a good model or not.

Step 1: Press the yellow 2nd key, then CATALOG.

CATALOG is located above the 0 key on the numeric keypad.

Note that all the commands in the TI-83 calculator are located in alphabetical order in the CATALOG.

Step 2: Using the down arrow key, move through the list until you see "Diagnostic On."  The black triangle should be in front of "Diagnostic On."

Step 3: Press ENTER. "Diagnostic On" should appear on the home screen.

Step 4: Press ENTER again to execute the "Diagnostic On" command.  Notice that the calculator returns "Done."
