USING the BLUE OPERATION KEYS |
The blue operation keys permit you to enter basic arithmetic expressions -- adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. A good rule of thumb when entering arithmetic expression (for example "3 + 4") is to enter it into the calculator as you see it on paper.
Example: Enter 3 + 4 into the calculator.
Step 1: Press the first number or term. In this example, it would be 3.
Step 2: Press the appropriate blue operation button. In this example, the blue + button above the ENTER key.
Step 3: Press the second number or term. In this example, it would be 4
Step 4: Press ENTER. The answer will appear on the right side of the screen. In this example, the answer is 7.
We often have to enter more complicated arithmetic expressions using parentheses. Remember! Parentheses are first on the list in the Orders of Operation. Therefore, you cannot leave off the parentheses -- otherwise, it will change your answer. For example:
(3 + 4) - 5 * 7
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Enter the left parenthesis by pressing the button above the 8 key.
Step 2: Enter 3
Step 3: Enter + (the addition sign)
Step 4: Enter 4
Step 5: Enter the right parenthesis by pressing the button above the 9 key.
Step 6: Enter - (the subtraction sign)
Step 7: Enter 5
Step 8: Enter * (the multiplication sign)
Step 9: Enter 7
Step 10: Press ENTER
It is very important to note that the calculator distinguishes between subtraction and a negative number. Even though we may consider it the same thing, the calculator does not.
When you enter a subtraction, use the blue subtraction -- key above the addition + key.
When you enter a negative number, use the (-) located to the left of the ENTER key.
CAUTION: If you attempt to use the negative (-) key for subtraction, you WILL get an error message.
