Faculty Mini-Grants
The September 28, 2007 deadline for
faculty mini-grant applications is fast approaching.
Mini-grants offer an opportunity and incentive to
full-time and part-time faculty to develop innovative
projects that go beyond regular classroom
responsibilities and to share these projects so they
benefit their colleagues and students. Mini-grants
will be awarded in amounts up to $500 for individual
projects, comparable amounts for team proposals. Visit
the ITC website for more information (http://www.itc.csmd.edu/grants/minigrant.htm).
Global
Initiative Committee, 09/27/07
The Global
Initiative Committee is once again offering full and
part-time faculty and
staff mini-grants to further CSM’s mission
to prepare its students and community to meet the
challenges of individual, social and global change.
Awards will be based on activity goals, benefits and
interest to the college and community, amount of funding
requested, and total number of programs funded. This
year we are especially interested in proposals that
support college-based international programs such as
learning lunches, guest speakers, lectures, seminars,
festivals and performances on the three CSM campuses.
For additional
information or for an application, contact Don Smith
(dons) at ext. 7858 or Janet Houser (janete) at ext.
5323. The application deadline for spring/summer
mini-grants is October 29, 2007. Please consult the web
page for applications and further information.

Letter from Tim Keating, 08/07/07
Dept Chairs:
I have asked Sue Subocz to serve as Interim Director of
the Innovative Teaching Center. Jean Runyon’s departure
has created a significant absence in the department, and
Sue’s experience and energy will serve us well as we
reorganize our Distance Learning function, ideally, in
line with the recommendations of the Distance Learning
Task Force.
Serving in an interim capacity can be difficult, but it
will be made easier by the support that I know all of
you will lend her and the ITC staff during this time.
Thank you, Sue, for taking over these responsibilities.
Thanks to all of the ITC staff for not losing any
momentum in this interim period. I would ask department
chairs to communicate this news to your full and part
time faculty, as I have no reliable way of being certain
to reach all faculty, though I know each of you do
within your own department.
Thanks in advance to all of you for your support for the
ITC.

Abstract
Podcasting and podcatching provide trainers and teachers
with powerful, personal tools for delivering exactly the
right content to learners at teachable moments—anytime,
anywhere. The strength of podcasting lies in the potency
of voice communication, which cuts through the dense
text of the Internet and offers a human connection
during distance training. In addition, podcasting offers
the ability for learners to multitask and to time-shift
content. Trainers, professors and librarians have
already begun using podcasting for myriad training and
learning situations, and new tools are making podcast
production possible for novices. Copyright, security,
searchability, archival, and diversity are some of the
current concerns podcasters must address as they develop
this new instructional avenue.

Apple Offers Free Hosting of Class
Lectures at 'Itunes U'
by Laura Ascione, Assistant Editor, eSchool News
http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/showStory.cfm?ArticleID=6153
“March 1, 2006 - Students at the University of
Michigan's School of Dentistry use their iPods and MP3
players for more than just listening to music--they also
listen to class lectures and review notes through a
student-run project that uses iTunes technology for
academic purposes. UM-Dentistry uses iTunes U, a
content-management system from Apple Computer, to post
audio recordings of class lectures online. Students can
preview a lecture recording, download an individual
lecture, or subscribe to have downloads delivered to
their computers or MP3 players automatically.”
“The program is yet another example of how schools are
tapping into the digital music and media phenomenon
created by the exploding popularity of Apple's iPod and
other portable MP3 players. And now, Apple says it is
making its iTunes U available free of charge to any
other school or university that wants to use it.” . . .
“UM-Dentistry students can access iTunes U through any
computer, using their UM identification and password.
Under UM's system, a designated student begins recording
a lecture at the beginning of class and stops the
recording when the lecture is over. That student then
posts the lecture audio online as soon as possible.
"I've had zero complaints," Lynn Johnson, associate
professor of dentistry, said of the school's
collaboration with Apple. "The students have it
organized, and they're doing it, and at the end of last
semester there were more than 300 lectures on the web
site." . . .
