Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack

We have had some issues with the new version of Microsoft Office and documents coming in .docx format.  It is not difficult to set up your computers both at CSM and at home to open this simply by double-clicking.  It just takes a few minutes to set up (or a little longer depending on your access method). 

Instructions

If you receive a file in a Microsoft Works format, in order to read it in Microsoft Office you need to download and install a converter which can be found here  The converter should only take a couple of minutes at the most to download and install.  After installing the converter you can view the Works file by doing the following:

In the program you're running, on the File menu, click Open.

In the Files of type: box, scroll down and select Works 6.0.

The Microsoft Works file should now open in Microsoft Office without any problems.

If you receive a file that was completed in the Microsoft Office 2007 software, in order to open and read these files you need to install a compatibility pack which can be found here  The compatibility pack; may take up to 30 minutes on slower connections to download and install.  (Normally it’s much quicker)  Once installed when you open a file created in Office 2007, Office 2003 will open the files without any user intervention. 

(Note:  The patch only works for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

If you have any problems downloading the above software please contact the Help Desk and they will provide you with a copy of the converter and the compatibility pack on a CD.

On Campus:

The converter should only take a couple of minutes at the most to download and install.  After installing the converter you can view the Works file by doing the following:
