Ball Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack, August 2007
We have had some issues with the new version of Microsoft Office and documents coming in .docx format. It is not difficult to set up your computers both at CSM and at home to open this simply by double-clicking. It just takes a few minutes to set up (or a little longer depending on your access method). Click here for Instructions.

More and more students are starting to use MS Office 2007, and some of them are starting to send attachments with MS Office 2007 file extensions like .docx.  There are 2 possible ways to deal with this:
1. Install a converter so you can open these files in previous versions of MS Word.
2. Advise students that they must submit files in Office 2003 file formats, like .doc files.

Detailed instructions for each option are listed below.
Note:  The converter program (MS Office Compatibility Pack) works for MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Powerpoints, not just MS Word.

Option 1.  Opening Office 2007 Files from Students

As students start upgrading their computers with the new version of Office, your students are going to start submitting files created using Office 2007. You will have to open them using Office 2003 which is the current version supported on campus. Even without Office 2007 you can still open Office 2007 documents by installing a Compatibility Pack from Microsoft.  After installing the upgrade you'll be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

You can download it from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

If you're a user of Microsoft Office XP or Office 2003 programs (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint), you'll need to install all high-priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading and installing the Compatibility Pack.

Option 2. Students save in .doc format.

If you save your document in the default file format in Office Word 2007, users of previous versions of Word must install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats to open the document. Alternatively, you can save the document in a format that can be opened directly in previous versions of Word  - but formatting and layout that depend on new features in Office Word 2007 will not be available in the previous version of Word.

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button Button image, and then point to Save As.
  2. Click Word 97-2003 Format.
  3. Type a name for the document, and then click Save.
Ball PowerPoint 2007 Downloads, February 27, 2007
So, someone sent you a PowerPoint 2007 file with the pptx extension -- and you have yet to upgrade to the latest version of PowerPoint. What can you do to quickly view the file?

Try this:
View pptx for free. Download and install the
PowerPoint 2007 free viewer. It will open up PowerPoint files with the old ppt extensions, as well as the new pptx extension. Of course, you cannot edit the files with the new PowerPoint 2007 viewer. You can only view the presentation.
